Scenario Setup#

Overview#

A scenario is a set of values that Excel saves and can substitute automatically on your worksheet. Scenario Setup is a tool to manage scenarios by copying the original data to the new location, creating different groups of values of original data for different cases. The user can copy rows or columns of data with this tool.

Examples#

Here is a step-by-step example of using Scenario Setup to move the first 2 rows and the last row of original data to a new location.

  1. Prepare an Excel sheet with data to copy (A1:B6 in this case).

  2. Open Finplicity, and then click Data Basics > Scenario Setup. The form of Scenario Setup will appear, as shown below.

  3. Click “Add” button. A new window will pop up. Then select the copy-from location and copy-to location. In this example, select A1:B2 in the copy-from and select E1 in the copy-to.

  4. Click “Add” to add this pair of locations to the table.

  5. Click “Add” button to add another pair of locations. Select the copy-from location and copy-to location. In this example, select A6:B6 in the copy-from and select E3 in the copy-to.

  6. Click “Add” to add this pair of locations to the table.

  7. If you want to make changes to previous added pairs, click on the row in the table and then click “Edit” button to edit it and add it back. If you want to delete previous added pairs, click on the row in the table and then click “Delete” button to delete it from the table.

  8. Now you have finished all the required fields in this form, and you can click “Run” to create the scenario or click “Save” to save this task. The data will automatically be copied to the selected locations.

FAQ#

  • What is order of copying if I select multiple pairs in the form?

The order of creating scenario (copying data) is from the first row to the last row in the Scenario Setup form.

  • Why does it take longer than expected to copy values?

It would take a few more seconds to create scenario with less specific range. (e.g., copying C:C would take more time than copying C2:C7 in the example dataset).

  • Can I select different workbook locations to copy-from and copy-to?

Yes, you can copy from one workbook location to another workbook location. Just to keep those workbooks open when you run the Scenario Setup task.
